The Melrose Paths Group was established in 2004 and comprises volunteers from the local communities around Melrose.
Our aim is to promote and help maintain a sustainable local path network around Melrose, giving access to the local countryside. Members come from the local communities around Melrose, with representatives from Melrose and District Community Council.
The Melrose Paths Group was the driving force behind the town of Melrose receiving “Walkers Are Welcome” status in 2010. The scheme promoted towns and communities as walker-friendly and aimed to benefit local economies by attracting tourism.
The bid was supported by the Melrose Community Council, The Melrose Traders Association, local Councillors (along with officials at Scottish Borders Council), and several hundred local signatories.
With the already significant work undertaken by the Paths Group over previous years, the Melrose community already had a well developed and maintained paths network and the town was well acquainted with the walking visitor. We ended our relationship with Walkers are Welcome as we believe that Melrose, with the support if its community, is now an established walking destination.
