Route 8 Melrose to Old Melrose Pilgrimage

Melrose to Old Melrose – 13 km/ 8 miles

ROUTE
A heritage walk to visit the area associated with St Cuthbert’s early monastic life at Old Melrose, which is situated within a looping meander of the River Tweed.
On the way, pass Trimontium, site of the Roman fort at the foot of the Eildon Hills. Return by the Rhymers Stone.

START AND FINISH
Parking area or bus stop near Trimontium site at east end of Newstead.
Extra 3 km/2 miles if starting from Melrose at Route 6.
Alternative Route: Abbey car park Buccleuch Street: start from small parking area/bus stop at the top end of Newstead village.

TIME
Allow 4 – 5 hours.

TERRAIN
Minor roads and mostly good paths, often across open country. Some stretches could be muddy after rain. Boots or walking shoes are recommended.

TOILETS
Abbey Street near car park; Old Melrose tearoom.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT
Regular bus services pass through Newstead and Leaderfoot roundabout.
